Touch Arcade picks their favorite iPhone games of 2009
Our friends over at Touch Arcade have put together their list of the best iPhone games of 2009, and if you happened to unwrap an iPod touch or an iPhone yesterday, that's as good a place as any to start hunting for your favorite games. Spider: Secret of Bryce Manor [$2.99, iTunes link] topped their list, and we agree that it's an excellent showcase for original iPhone software (there's also a promo version if you want to try the gameplay for free). Other than that, there's a few of our favorites missing from the list (no Ramp Champ? No Galcon Labs?), but there are plenty of terrific games to download and play on into 2010. It's been a fantastic year for iPhone gaming -- if you haven't yet jumped in and checked out some of the best the platform has to offer, what are you waiting for? Get downloading!
DS Daily: Pick three
Many DS owners are blessed with a sizable library of games, thanks to the fact that the tiny cartridges tend to be cheaper than games for other systems. In fact, some of the handheld's best titles are budget games, available for prices so low that it's ridiculous (but in a good way). But not everyone is so lucky. Recent adopters, or those who had a DS, but only discovered the handheld's depth of late, are faced with shelves and shelves of games from which to choose. Some things are easy picks: Link and Mario rarely make bad choices for the Nintendo fan. But there's so much else out there. One reader e-mailed us asking for help in choosing from that vast selection, and we're turning that request over to you. Beyond the obvious -- like Mario Kart, Pokémon, and Phantom Hourglass, if you had to name three excellent DS games, what would you choose? We'll throw out three as well: The World Ends With You, Professor Layton and the Curious Village, and Contra 4.
DS Daily: Top of the heap
You know you've been waiting for this moment, and it's finally come -- we want you to give us the rundown on your picks for the best DS games this year. We'll be using this topic to shape our games of the year poll, so put some thought into your choices and feel free to repeat each other. Name the biggies, choose the obscure games -- throw it all out there. You're probably not alone in what you like, after all! We're all mad here.
Poll results: Playing favorites
In the midst of our celebration of all things Zelda, we asked you to choose, once and for all, your favorites from the franchise (up to, but not including Phantom Hourglass). It was a hard fight, but as many might have guessed, Ocarina of Time snatched the console title away from A Link to the Past. The handheld fight was a little closer -- skip on past the break to see the results of that wrestling match -- but votes were very much weighed in favor of two of the five titles, whereas votes on the console games were more spread out. The final results might not have been too surprising when it comes to the winner, but the fact that every single game got at least a few votes certainly is. Now that's the mark of a good franchise!
